MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Review

In MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Masters of the Universe is the sword and sorcery action adventure film that moviegoers have been waiting for. Based on the beloved 1980s animated television series, it is a unique adaptation that both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy. It delivers a healthy dose of nostalgia for adults looking to relive their childhood while introducing a new generation to the world of Eternia.

Nicholas Galitzine is a strong choice to lead the film as Adam and He Man. He convincingly portrays one of the most powerful heroes in the universe and looks the part from head to toe. Adam is a young man living on Earth who discovers the truth about his legacy as the prince of the distant planet Eternia. After learning of his destiny, he must recover a magical sword to protect his home kingdom from impending evil.

Standing in his way is Jared Leto as Skeletor, who proves to be a worthy archrival. Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan also deliver strong supporting performances. Together, the cast brings the necessary energy, charisma, and chemistry to create an entertaining adventure from beginning to end.

The story itself is fairly straightforward, following a familiar battle between good and evil. Fortunately, Jared Leto’s performance as Skeletor keeps things entertaining through his perfect blend of comedy, silliness, and ruthless ambition. He becomes the type of villain you love to hate, making it impossible not to root against him.

The rest of the cast is equally impressive, especially Nicholas Galitzine. Adam is courageous, likable, and humorous even before embracing his destiny. However, the moment he declares, “I Have the Power!”, the entire film transforms. The action becomes more intense, the stakes immediately rise, and the adventure shifts into another gear.

The film wisely spends enough time on Earth establishing its characters and mythology before transporting audiences to Eternia. As a result, the transition feels natural rather than rushed. Eternia itself is breathtaking, filled with vibrant colors, imaginative landscapes, and spectacular production design. Watching these locations unfold feels like taking a vacation to another world. Even if you know very little about the franchise, the film quickly makes you feel emotionally connected to Eternia and invested in protecting it alongside its heroes.

Masters of the Universe is not a masterpiece. The runtime is slightly longer than necessary, and some action sequences are executed with more precision than others. The story also would have benefited from giving Skeletor stronger motivations, making him an even more compelling villain.

Despite those shortcomings, the world the filmmakers have created is expansive, exciting, and filled with limitless potential. It leaves you wanting to spend more time in Eternia and learn more about its characters and mythology. More importantly, it makes a sequel feel not only deserved but necessary. Masters of the Universe lays the foundation for what could become an outstanding live action franchise and is absolutely worth the price of admission.
