Erica, who ends up as the entertainment at her ex-fiancé’s wedding after reluctantly taking a gig at a luxurious island resort while in the wake of a music career meltdown.
Weddings are supposed to be one of the greatest blessings that one can achieve in life, but sometimes they end in an epic disaster. Imagine splitting with your fiancé only to land a gig as a wedding singer a year later at that same ex’s new wedding. Yes, you heard that correctly. What a nightmare that would be, and in this romantic comedy that’s where we find our lead Erica (Christina Milian) with all the shenanigans that will ensue.
Milian has been around the entertainment block for some time now with years of experience under her belt. She’s both a singer and actress and combined those talents in this latest film Resort to Love. She has similar traits to her character Erica, being as sweet and innocent as she can be, and it’s great that audiences will be able to see that from the comfort of their own home on Netflix. What’s great about this film is Milian’s sense of humor is unapologetic in some of its exaggerations as she reacts to certain situations. As shocking events happen time after time for Erica, it was hilarious to see her unique response as she stares at the camera screaming at the top of her lungs in agony and disbelief. All films have characters who go through different levels of emotion, but it’s the way it’s captured on screen here that makes it that much more relatable.
Milian has a decent group of supporting characters to share the screen with as well. While the introduction to her friend, played by Sinqua Walls, was as cliché and corny as it could be, if you’re a fan of either him or Milian then this may be the best escape for you living vicariously through their roles. The predicament that she’s in is also funny. No one deserves this, and it’s a painful laughing session seeing Erica breakdown in her most vulnerable moments while still being in love with her ex. What’s great is she handled herself like a lady the best way she could, but seeing her spiral down in despair was entertaining at the very least.
This film is filled with cringe-worthy hilarious moments that many will get a chuckle out of. If you’re a fan of Christina Milian it’s hard to imagine you’d be disappointed. If you’re casual you may be disappointed about the ending, with it being quite disturbing. There will be no spoilers here, but there is a huge conflict of interest with one of her new love interests. On the flip side, it’s great not knowing how this film will end, but when it does a sour taste is left surrounding the air. If it wasn’t for this writing decision, this would be an all-around great experience, but instead, it’s barely passable due to an inevitable conflict that may be on the rise at the next family reunion.
