After a harrowing plane crash, a Special Forces officer and his combat dog find themselves stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Together, they are forced into a brutal fight for survival against the elements.
Whether you’re a dog owner or not, Heart of the Beast is uniquely special and a film you’ll remember for quite some time. Director David Ayer (A Working Man, Fury) takes you on an adventure for survival that truly depicts how a dog is a man’s best friend. You may walk away from this film jealous that you don’t share the bond between the main characters, Special Forces officer James Belmont (Brad Pitt) and his lovely companion Odin (Uber). These two are remarkable, and the way they fight for each other makes you want to live forever. There are only a total of four characters in this film, but the relationships and dynamics between them may bring you to tears. There are a few other characters who aren’t credited, including the land and nature of the film, along with the score by Emmy-nominated composer Jared Michael Fry.
To say the land and nature are beautiful is an understatement. The trees, lakes, rivers, forests, and mountainsides appear as a moving portrait of God’s creation, and the score moves with every beat. Jared showcases his skill, and it’s very apparent why David wanted to work with Jared again for this third time around. The film would’ve already been great with its unapologetic isolation and silence, but the score takes a strong hold of your attention, catering to each scene more and more and never letting go.
The animals in this film speak volumes as well. No matter if it was the photorealistic CGI effects, animatronics, or some form of magic, there’s an appreciation for these creatures, even if they’re all salivating at the mouth to end your life. There’s a mutual respect between all of them, and it reminds you that this world is just as much theirs as it is yours.
This movie is also an instruction manual on how to survive with very little resources and serious injuries, so note-taking would be advised. Heart of the Beast is easily one of the better films of 2026. If you don’t own a pet, you’ll want one after seeing this film. Everyone can take something away from this film, whether it’s the relationship, the appreciation of the wild, the sensational musical composition, or the emotions and physicality of Hollywood star Brad Pitt.
The only regret you’ll have is not seeing it sooner.
