When it comes to range Chris Hemsworth is a true talent. He’s able to lead large blockbuster extravaganzas, be the comic relief in a Ghostbusters (2016) reboot, and bring all the heart and emotions to a film like Rush (2013). What’s great a about Extraction is you get a good mixture of all of those elements.
Taylor Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a deadly black-market mercenary with all the expert assassination skills that you can ask for. When’s he’s tasked with extracting a young boy from point A to B in an overpopulated Indian town ran by ruthless drug lords, he’s faced with deadly enemies hiding around every corner salivating at the chance to slice his face.
Hands down the best part of this film is the action. The fight choreography in the film is purely outstanding. Every punch, kick, and melee is thrown out with expert accuracy and precision, as if it were the real thing and just so happened to be caught on camera. Stunt director Sam Hargrave really knows what he’s doing behind the camera to give viewers a dream come true experience. It’s not only how well the fight sequences are, but also how they’re shot. Hargrave is able to create long one take shots that don’t cut, and pull you into the action even more. It’s done so well that it competes with films like The Raid (2011) and The Raid 2 (2014) with all the brutality and goodness.
The mixture of elements comes in when Taylor starts to get emotional. His character is one that has seen the ugliest parts of life, and he just wants to go out with an honorable death. It’s not a mindset I typically agree with, but I do understand and respect where the character is coming from. Because of a past tragedy, Taylor feels there’s not much to live for, and you can feel all of this through the performance of Hemsworth during a brief moment with the mcguffin of this film, Ovi Mahajan.
My only complaint about the film is the ending. Instead of it stomping its foot down, letting you know clearly what the outcome is, it’s left ambiguous for you to decide for yourself. There are no rules written anywhere saying that a film needs to be complicated, because Extraction simply isn’t. That still works, as Extraction accomplishes the goal it set out to do; and that is entertain. The execution across the board was superb. This film is the perfect stay at home action beat fest, or it could be equally enjoyed at a prime movie theater.
